How To Interview A Celebrity Chef

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 9:54 am

Pupils at Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth were given a taste of journalism with tips on interviewing a celebrity chef.

They were asked to imagine they were working as reporters thirty years ago and that they had been sent to speak to the Godmother of TV cooking shows, Fanny Cradock.

Interviewing tips from Up To Speed's Tom Hill

The face of food for many viewers from the 1950s to the 1970s, Mrs Cradock was a Talbot Heath old girl and, and as today’s students soon found out, a particularly colourful character.

She had been expelled from the school at the age of sixteen for holding a séance in the library and was subsequently married four times, once bigamously, before finding fame and celebrity alongside her last spouse, Johnny.

There may have been many morals to the story the group wrote with Up To Speed’s Tom Hill at the end of the class, but the main lesson for today’s budding reporters was that even the simplest questions, such as, “Are you Miss, Mrs or Ms?” can have intriguing answers.

Magazine covers and the power of pictures

Magazine expert Peter Jackson

Magazine expert Peter Jackson

Magazine expert Peter Jackson gave Up To Speed’s students a fascinating insight into the secrets of successful publishing and the power of the still image this week.

The owner of Grayling Publishing Services cautioned our photography and magazine journalism students against wordy, cluttered covers and showed how style, innovation and bold statements can make any publication alluring.

Peter was speaking from experience. He has twice been named Magazine Editor of the year and has edited Drive, TV Times, the Sunday Times Magazine, as well as being launch editor of the UK editions of Elle and Sky magazines.

You can see more examples of Peter’s work on his website Maximags.
