Syllabus

Press photographers and photojournalists have been responsible for capturing some of the most moving, influential and memorable images of the 20th and early 21st Centuries.

To take these images you have to have a clear understanding of the story you are covering, the way your images might be used in print, online or in broadcasts and the impact they may have on readers and viewers who see them.

Good press photographs can provide a split-second insight into a story, or make us pause for a moment to evaluate its importance or impact. This means that as a press photographer or photojournalist you will be able to wield both power and influence.

However, your images can be manipulated by other people and the meaning you intended to convey can be distorted. There have been times when photojournalists have been accused of preying on their subjects or of invading their privacy.

You will study these moral and ethical issues and others you may face as a press photographer or as a photojournalist trying to document the world around you.

You will learn about the Press Complaints Commission’s code of conduct and other regulatory rulings on press photography and video journalism.
