Kelly Sorbie, 24, took time out from her rigorous studies at Up To Speed to speak to Henry Wallers about her future as a journalist.

A deep rooted love of writing is what drives Kelly Sorbie to pursue a career in journalism. She has been writing fiction since she was only seven years old and fondly recounts a time when, “My mum used to give me pages of paper stapled together and I would write my own stories and draw my own illustrations!”

Studying English Literature and Creative writing at Bath Spa University enabled Kelly to further hone her skills in a subject that had already begun to bring success. Prior to university, a stint with Charminster-based creative writing magazine Writers’ Forum saw her work published for the very first time.

The entertainment industry is Kelly’s passion and this is what she believes her career is destined to focus on. “Entertainment and culture is my favourite thing,” said the 24 year-old, who hopes to review films, books and television. She speaks enthusiastically about these subjects. She particularly enjoys the blockbuster American TV programme Mad Men, which she loves not only for the programme’s razor sharp style but for its illuminating take on gender relations in post-Second World War America.

It is science-fiction, however, that truly inspires Kelly and this is where she would like to channel her creative attention. “It’s my passion and I think it’s important to have a deep understanding of the subject you choose to work on.”

A successful work placement with Sci-Fi enthusiasts SFX magazine in 2007 and 2008, cemented Kelly’s belief that her future lay in science-fiction reporting.

While she readily accepts that the science-fiction industry is primarily aimed at men between the ages of 20 and 35, she is not concerned and cites two women as her figures of inspiration. Jayne Nelson, who works for SFX and Total Film, is chosen for her “sparky and funny” take on all things Sci-Fi. While Tara Bennett’s job of interviewing film stars and commentating on the Sci-Fi film industry, represents the pinnacle of the profession in Kelly’s eyes.

Talking to Kelly it is clear that she possesses an enthusiasm for Sci-Fi to go along with her encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject. It makes it all the more likely that this budding journo will follow Nelson and Bennett to the top.

By Kelly Sorbie

Henry Wallers, 22, a new recruit at Up To Speed journalism, hails from the bustle and bright lights of London, but still has his hand firmly in International Politics.

Henry Wallers and Lauren May

Studying at Leeds University, Henry developed a deep interest in international relations, particularly the politics of America, Russia and the Middle East.

“I did my dissertation on Hezbollah, the controversial Lebanese Shia political party,” said Henry.

“I tried to come at it from a different angle than the usual view of it as a terrorist organisation. I found my studies deeply interesting and wanted to take that knowledge further.”

He feels that these interests are what led him to consider a career in journalism.

“My dream direction would be world politics. Ideally, I’d love to write for the politics section of a national paper or a larger news organisation.”

Henry is hoping to find work experience in these areas and confesses to having, “a real interest in things that others might find trivial. I’m interested in lots of things. I always want to know more.”

This inquisitive nature will surely serve him well in his quest to become a reporter.

In terms of more personal politics, Henry insists: “I have no tribal allegiance to any one party. It really does depend on the issue.”

He does not feel drawn heavily either to the left or the right of party politics, preferring to see things as they unfold. He sees himself as, “outgoing and both a thinker and a listener”.

Henry is also about to enter the blogosphere and is getting to grips with social networking; skills essential for any 21st Century journalist.

“I’m on Twitter now and I’m about to start a blog, but I’m still working on the name.”

In his spare time, Henry loves football and is an avid Chelsea fan. He enjoys early and modern rock music, such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He says: “I’m learning to play the guitar, but I’m not very good at it yet.”

He also loves watching films of all genres from world cinema to more mainstream action thrillers. Although he says: “I don’t really like horror or sci-fi films, but other than that I’ll watch anything. My favourite film at the moment is ‘The Departed.’ ”

With a firm grounding in politics and a passion to learn, we’re sure that Henry will adapt well to the upcoming challenges of the NCTJ exams in Public Affairs and Law as well as getting that place that he dreams of on a national paper.
