Six simple reasons to take an Up To Speed journalism or photography course

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 4:27 pm

6. Location, Location, Location

Location 1: Bournemouth has a national reputation for media training. This is based on film courses run at its college, journalism and television courses at Bournemouth University and now Up To Speed’s own vocational courses in journalism and photojournalism.

This means there is a media buzz around the town and a pool of talented tutors. All of the tutors teaching Up To Speed’s core journalism subjects also have extensive experience of teaching at BU.

Location 2: The South and South West. Up To Speed’s NCTJ fast-track courses are the nearest choice for people living in Bournemouth, Dorset, Wiltshire, Devon and South Wales. Some of our most successful graduate students have come from the universities of Exeter, Bristol and Southampton. Many people who have grown up in Poole, Bournemouth or the surrounding area have come home to study with us for six months before landing their first jobs in London. Up To Speed students have also landed jobs as reporters with the Bournemouth Daily Echo and the Dorset Echo and others are working as journalists for magazines in Bournemouth, or for sports websites in the town.

Location 3: Our training centre is based in a newspaper office. This means you can interact with working journalists and soak up the atmosphere of a building where journalists such as Mark Austin, Sir David English and Bill Bryson have cut their teeth.

If Bournemouth is not close to home for you we can put you in touch with our network of landladies in the town or help you find accommodation through websites. In a town with more than 15,000 students there are lots of possibilities.

Students on our courses have from as far afield as Aberystwyth, Aberdeen, Paris and Belfast.

There are still limited spaces on our fast-track courses starting on September 26th. To contact us today to get Up To Speed.

ipad 2 Gamer Stephen Stars In Vodcasts

Saturday, March 12th, 2011 at 2:36 am

Imagine it’s your first day in a new job and your boss asks you to spend all day playing a computer game.

It may sound far-fetched but that’s exactly what happened to former Up To Speed journalism student Stephen Ashby.

Stephen, 22, is working as a staff writer at i-create magazine. The Lancaster University graduate spends his time reviewing games, testing apps and writing tutorials to help readers make the most of their macs.

The job also means he will have the chance to test many of Apple’s new products before they even appear in the shops.

Stephen joined Up To Speed in September and took the Magazine Journalism options.

As part of the job, Stephen also appears in regular video podcasts.

Why not subscribe to the i-create podcast on i-tunes for free to see for yourself.

i-create is owned by Imagine Publishing in Bournemouth. The company recently gave all its journalists i-pads.
