Friday, November 16th, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Eight Up To Speed Journalism students took their first external shorthand exams eight weeks into their NCTJ course in Bournemouth.

They all sat the 60 words per minute exam and are working to improve their speeds before the next exams at the end of this month.

There are seventeen students in all studying shorthand on Up To Speed’s NCTJ Diploma courses leading to qualifications in Magazine, Sport and News reporting. They are aiming to pass the 100 wpm exams before their course finishes in early March.

The nine photojournalism students at Up To Speed do not take a shorthand exam as part of their diploma. This week the photojournalists have been taking sport pictures and taking part in freelance days where they complete a photographic commission for a client within a working day.

How to be a journalist without a degree? Just look in the Mirror

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at 8:42 am

Working Journalist: Heather Findlay decided against a degree

If Heather Findlay had taken a Gap Year before uni, she would just have finished Freshers’ Week. But the straight-A student has a mind of her own and she is now working as a professional journalist, seeing her articles appearing in double-page spreads in national newspapers and magazines.

When Heather left Brockenhurst College in 2010 she joined the Up To Speed Fast-Track course in Magazine Journalism based at the Bournemouth Daily Echo. She passed her 100wpm shorthand exams and all the other components of the NCTJ diploma course covering magazines, politics, Media Law and news reporting and started work as soon as the course finished.

Heather, 19,  works for an agency in Bristol called Medavia where she finds stories and features and pitches them to national newspapers and magazines. This week she had a piece across two pages in the  Daily Mirror.

Heather said: “I am really pleased that it has all worked out for me and that my decision to do something different, and not just follow all my friends to university, has paid off.”

If you want to follow in Heather’s footsteps click here.

You can see the story and another she had in the same newspaper earlier this month by clicking here.
