A former Up To Speed student has won the Football League Sports Journalism Award and a chance to report from the press box at the Championship play-off finals.

Tom Crocker’s match report will be published on the Football League website. Tom won the award for coming top in the NCTJ’s national Sports Journalism exam last year and he was presented with his certificate by NCTJ Chairman Kim Fletcher.

Tom, 19, joined Up To Speed from Poole Grammar School. He took the fast-track course at our Daily Echo offices.

Up To Speed’s sports journalism tutor Rick Broadbent said: “Tom was one of those students at Up To Speed who needed minimal help with his writing. He has got a natural talent for crisp, clean and clear copy that would make him an asset to any sports desk. He has also had the gumption to go and get experience of the sporting world, working at AFC Bournemouth during a turbulent time in the club’s history, and I am sure that combination of initiative and journalistic skill will hold him in good stead in the years ahead.”

The final night of track and field competition was another special evening of world records, British success and Olympic glory.
The stars of Jamaica’s sensational 4x100m team held Team USA at bay and Mo Farah became one of the all-time greats of UK athletics by clinching a second Gold, this time in the 5000m.

“It’s all about hard work and grafting,” said Mo Farah after the race.
And witnessing all of this from the press box was the Times Athletics Correspondent Rick Broadbent, who teaches on the NCTJ Sports Journalism course at Up To Speed.

Reporting From The Olympic Stadium – Up To Speed’s Sports Journalism Tutor

Sunday, August 5th, 2012 at 9:33 am

It is one of the great privileges of working as a journalist that there are times when you find yourself with a front row seat at a moment when history is made. And Up To Speed’s Sports Journalism Tutor enjoyed several of those moments yesterday as the Athletics Correspondent of  The Times.

Rick Broadbent was there to witness and report on Britain’s highest Gold Medal haul since the first London Olympics in 1908.  He was there to share moments of triumph for Greg Rutherford, Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah, athletes he has followed, interviewed and written about in the years running up to London 2012. And today Rick is heading back to the 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium for another thrilling day of athletics.

Rick teaches Sports Journalism to graduates, school-leavers and Gap Year students on Up To Speed’s NCTJ Diploma Fast-Track course, which is based at the Daily Echo building in Bournemouth. There are still limited spaces on the six-month, full-time course which starts on September 24 if you would like to follow in Rick’s footsteps.

You can check out some of Rick’s stories from yesterday by downloading this pdf and follow the rest of his Olympic journey every day in the The Times.
